Choosing The Right Style Of Dance To Learn

By Peggy Ryersen

A great form of exercise is dancing and at the same time it is also a great hobby to have. Once you have decided that you want to learn how to dance then it is best to choose and focus on one particular style. There are many styles to choose from and you will need to take the time to find the one dance style that is just right.

You will have to start your search by taking all options into consideration. This is important, because each type of dance has its own unique characteristics and accompanying music. Ballroom dancing covers several styles and often requires a partner. Ballet is a form of slow dancing and the focus is on technique. Hip hop is modern and mostly based upon the beat of the music being danced to. Salsa is a Latin dance and involves moving to a rhythm. Belly dancing is for those who like the sensual dance style and good exercise. Then there is tap dancing which is a classical dance that has its focus on beats and timing.

After you see the options available to you will need to choose one for you. You should take into consideration what your goal is. Did you want to lose weight, dance just for fun or do you want to be in competitions eventually. Perhaps all you want is a hobby. You will be able to decide once you know what your goals are.

You also need to think about your physical capabilities. Some dance styles require great flexibility. Other styles require good balance and coordination. You should try to choose a style of dance that will work with your natural abilities, so that you have less of a learning curve and can get started learning actual dance technique.

After determining goals and physical ability, you have to look more closely into each dance style and find out which are most appealing to you. You might like hip hop music or want to have the lean appearance of a ballet dancer, for example. Weigh the pros and cons of each style of dance and choose one you like that fulfills your goals, as well as appeals to you.

Sometimes if you are undecided which to choose, some classes will let you come as a guest to try out different styles so you can narrow down your choices and find the one you like. Many times trying one out is all it takes to decide.

Once you choose the style of dance that you want to learn you need to choose dance instructor. You will usually either have the option of learning in a class or getting private instruction. Consider your preference and comfort with each option and also think about the cost. In most cases private lessons will be more expensive than group options.

It is a lot of fun to learn how to dance, but it is also a great way to exercise and maintain a healthy body. After finding a dance style you like, you can also spend time learning the techniques and perfecting your dance style. If you are good then you may even have the opportunity to compete in competitions for your style of dance. - 31486
